The Church and Victoria Street intersection in Onehunga was considered high risk. Despite being a low speed zone, between 2014 and 2018 there were 43 crashes resulting in several injuries, including one serious injury.

In 2019, Auckland Transport installed a roundabout to reduce the number of crashes and the severity of injuries.

Roundabouts slow motorists down making it safer to merge with other vehicles on the road.

Raised safety platforms were also installed at roundabout entry points. The raised safety platforms encourage safer speeds by making it physically uncomfortable for motorists to drive over the platform faster than the suggested speed.

These two treatments in combination make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road and motorists to join traffic flow.

In the year since the completion of the safety treatment, there have been no reported crashes or injuries.
